Just as Japanese culture is unique, similarly we have an Amazing Japanese brand called Uniqlo.  Which means ‘Unique’ and ‘clothing’- simple and clever. They are world-famous for being high-quality, innovative, functional, and affordable. Just as we all know about sustainability, and we all have heard a lot about it these days Uniqlo being a fast-fashion brand has been launching RE. UNIQLO, “unlocking the Power of Clothing”.

If we start speaking about, Uniqlo’s India store offers a customization service for customers to create their own T-shirts. They also collaborated with Indian designer Rina Singh(Founder & Designer, Eka New Delhi)  to create a kurta collection ahead of its launch that was made available to buy in India and select stores in Southeast Asia. Despite a growing appetite for Western wear, traditional wear made up 70 percent of women’s apparel sales in 2017 and is expected to hold onto a market share of 65 percent through 2023, according to the 2018 India Business Fashion Report. The brand also showcased the works of local artists and another talent in stores as part of Uniqlo’s international Good Neighbourhood Guide initiative.

The Uniqlo Kurta campaign.

Talking more on sustainability projects, they have committed to reducing single-use plastic in its stores, beginning September 2019 by phasing out plastic shopping bags, and continuing throughout 2020 made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper or recycled paper and also in many other products. UNIQLO is a member of the non-profit Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) that supports sustainable cotton production.

Talking more about RE-Uniqlo, where Re stands for RECYCLE, REUSE, REDUCE. They recycle the used garments through their circular sustainability programme. They collect garments from all over the world and transform them into new products. They also work with NGO’s and partners to distribute wearable used clothing to refugees, disaster victims and other in need worldwide.

Let’s talk about its Feature product; Sustainable jeans.

So, jeans are always been that super saviour for all of us. when in doubt wear a denim is something we have heard always. Denim is a love that never Fades.

They are Making more sustainable jeans. So basically, jeans making process requires lots of water, which is then drained wastewater. So, for Raw cotton cultivation UNIQLO is a member of the non-profit Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) that supports sustainable cotton production. BCI seeks to spread better cotton cultivation techniques by teaching producers about appropriate water usage, and the uses of pesticides and other chemicals.

And for garment production, finished jeans are washed together with replaced conventional pumice stones to artificial eco stones which can be reused over a long period of time in a washing machine for a popular faded look

They have many other sustainable activity processes like the technology such as advanced equipment such as laser processing and nanobubble ozone washing machines, as well as the expertise of designers to reduce water use by up to 99%*. The entire line up of UNIQLO jeans will be produced with this technology by 2020. Also by incorporating laser technology, they decreased the need for manual labour to distress jeans and reduced our use of water.

As we all know the impact of fast fashion is severe but we also know that it is going to take time to reduce it and the eradicate Fast Fashion so why not work along. Just as Uniqlo is trying let’s aware people more and help them make their brands sustainable and significantly reducing the impact on environment. Think about it the next time you go shopping.!
